14 Days of Christmas Shakeology Shake Off

Now that Thanksgiving is over, our bellies are full, pants may be a bit snug,  and we are heading into holiday parities, baking cookies, and the stress of getting our shopping done in time for Christmas.  Ugh!  Although I absolutely LOVE this time of year, it is soooo busy!  Sometimes we just need a little "boost" or accountability to fire things back up, right?  Well, that's what I need as I prepare for all of my upcoming holiday parties!  I don't want to have that mind set of accepting the fact that I am going to put on a few pounds within the next month just because cookies and sweets will be easily accessible.  In fact, I have full intention of staying on track with my clean eating lifestyle but still plan to indulge in my favorite treats....for example, Peanut Butter Blossom cookies.....BEST COOKIES EVER!  I have learned that it is all about finding a balance and deciding what exactly I want to spend my sugar and calorie intake on.  It's true, you CAN have your cake AND eat it too!

There are a few reasons.  First, in order to truly begin to feel the benefits of Shakeology, I believe that you should consistently drink if for at least 2 weeks.  Second, there isn't much time until Christmas!  I want to provide you with a place to go that will help you stay healthy and even find some new holiday recipes for you and your family!  Finally, I look at this as a mini health and fitness support group.  Typically, my groups run either 30 or 60 days.  By doing a 14 day group, you will have a first hand sneak peek into how these groups run.  Then, you will be able to make the decision as to whether you want to make the full commitment into my 60 day group that will begin on January 6, 2014.

Press play at least 4 to 6 times a week and CHALLENGE yourself!  Don't just go through the motions.  If it's your first time doing a workout, try to up the weights, do extra reps, or slow down your repetitions.   If you are new to fitness, then I challenge you to do some form of physical activity at least 3-4 times per week, or continue with the fitness routine that you are currently doing (you could try to up the intensity).  If you would like more information on picking out a fitness program that will meet your needs and ability level, I can help you get started with that as well. 

5. Either at kick off or at the end of the 14 day program, do the 3 Day Shakeology Cleanse.  For me, I plan to do this beginning December 26.  The 3 Day Shakeology Cleanse is optional.  You do not have to do this.

6. Tips to Stay Focused and On Track this Thanksgiving!

Well, I'm going to say it, it's officially the holiday season! My husband and I went out this past weekend to do the majority of our Christmas shopping and the rest can now be done online....what a relief!  I'm not a big fan of those holiday crowds!  My 3 year old daughter convinced me to decorate the house and yes, even put up the Christmas tree yesterday!  I know, it's not even Thanksgiving, but I am typically an early decorator when it comes to Christmas since we travel for Thanksgiving.  I'm also that person who takes the decorations down before January 1st!
So with all of the holiday cheer comes those extra sweets and added calories to your day, particularly on Thanksgiving Day.  We are with my family for Thanksgiving this year which means we will be traveling about an hour and half each way.  Ugh!  Thanksgiving dinner with my family isn't exactly "typical."  Since I come from an Italian family, I will not only be surrounded with the usual turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, etc. but also gnocchi's, meatballs, and even some beef as well!  As for dessert, it's not just pumpkin pie, but also vanilla AND chocolate graham cracker pie, usually a chocolate pie, maybe a coconut pie.  It differs a bit from year to year.  You'd think that I'm talking about a family of 30 or 40 people but I have to say, there are only 12 of us along with my two little ones!   It is all so delicious that you don't even know where to start!  I typically end my dinner feeling completely full and bloated and then fill my containers with leftovers to take home.  I vow that this year is going to be much different.  While I'm looking forward to all of the fantastic food, I am going to pick and choose what I want to use my calorie intake on.  Just because I'm not planning to stuff my face with food this year, doesn't mean that my Thanksgiving is going to be ruined.  I am going to be following the 80/20 rule.  At least 80% of my day will be focused on choosing healthy options. So, what can you do to have a healthy holiday that doesn't leave you with those extra pounds?  Needless to say, I have a game plan and am going to share it, along with my tips, with you!
For starters, I am sharing my weekly meal plan. I'm keeping it pretty simple this week, which meant a less expensive grocery bill!  I am planning to use my 2:00pm Thanksgiving dinner as my cheat for the week because I may enjoy a small piece of pie or fill my plate a tad more than a usual dinner of mine.  The key is to watch portion sizes!  While I may have an extra starch on my plate, it will not be a huge pile, rather a cupped handful.  I am also planning to have some leftovers for dinner on Friday; however, it will not be cheat for me.  I will stick with a piece of lean turkey, probably a sweet potato, and some green beans.  I have my Shakeology incorporated every day and even twice on Thanksgiving Day!  Why?  Because I know we will be making the drive back home some time in the evening and I want to make sure that I do not skip a meal and end up starving when we get home.  That's one of the many great perks with Shakeology.  You always have a healthy, nutritious option! 
Now on to my tips:
1. Workout!  Even though it is a holiday, that is no excuse to skip my workout.  I usually get my workout in during the mid morning, but since we will be leaving by 10:00am, I will make sure that I get it in before my family wakes up in the morning.  Since I am doing Focus T25, I only need 25 minutes!  It's important that you don't take unscheduled rest days.  I've learned that the hard way.  I took a few days off and it was rough getting back on track!  So, even if it is a run on the treadmill, a quick trip to the gym, or a different home fitness program, it's important that you don't miss your workout! 
2. Bring a healthy dish!  For me, I know that there are going to be some healthy options at my dinner; however, if you know that you are going to be faced with unhealthy choices, bring a healthy side dish!  At least you know that what you are bringing is healthy, so, you can load your plate with what you brought along with some fruits and veggies, and you are good to go!  If you drink  Shakeology, you can stash a pack in your car with a bottle of water so that you have something else in case you get hungry. 
3. Don't starve yourself! This is a big one!  In the past I never ate anything until dinner time because I knew I'd be over indulging later in the day.  I figured I'd be saving all of my calories for that one big meal.  Looking back, what was I thinking?!  I would be sooo hungry come dinner time and eat WAY TO MUCH, feel tired, sluggish, bloated, and then see it on the scale by the next morning!  This year, I plan to stick with my typical 5 meals.  I will drink my shake in the morning, have my mid morning snack in the car followed by my dinner (at lunch time) and my shake in the evening.  No different than any other day!  And again, my Thanksgiving will be no less fun!
4. Stay hydrated! Aim to drink at least 1/2 of your body weight in ounces.  By doing so, you are not only staying hydrated, but it will keep feeling fuller and you will be less likely to overeat come dinner time. 
5. Munch on healthy food!  Ok so how many of you sit around the dinner table with your family chatting away?  And what is in front of you on that table?  I'm guessing some sort of treat,  maybe a basket of chips, a cheese tray...  And what typically happens?  Does your hand seem to make it's way to the table mindlessly munching on those treats???  It's okay, you can admit it!  Try sticking to fruits and veggies if you feel the need to munch.  And be cautious of the dips!! 
6. Pack your cooler!  Since I know that I will be traveling in the car to and from my family's house, I am planning on packing my cooler with a few snacks.  I will be making my peanut butter banana roll up in the morning to pack, as well as an apple, my pre-portioned almonds, and of course, my Shakeology.  It's pretty simple!  I now that I will be completely prepared for when I get hungry in the car and won't be left starving at any point during the day.  
7. Be prepared and plan ahead!  None of these tips would be feasible if I didn't plan ahead.  Plan out your day, know where you are going to be and when.  Then, base your meals around that!  Trust me, it will all be worth it when you wake up Friday morning not feeling sluggish and still full from the day before!

Ezekiel Bread Stuffing

Ezekiel Bread is something that I switched to several months ago.  It is a dense, chewy, flour-less bread made with a variety of whole grains that are minimally processed.  I can tell you that my two and three year old LOVE bread and when I gave them a piece of Ezekiel Bread, they didn't even taste a difference!  You can find this bread in the freezer section of most grocery stores.  My local grocery stores, Giant Eagle and Martins, has Ezekiel Bread in the Organic or Natural section.  As always, mind your portions when eating!
This recipe makes approximately 13 servings.
  • 1 loaf of Plain Ezekiel Bread, thawed and broken into bite-sized cubes
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme
  • 1/2 tsp dried rosemary
  • 2 tsp dried ground sage
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 6 Tbsp olive oil based margarine
  • 1 large sweet onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 5 celery stalks, thinly sliced (including leaves)
  • 1/4 cup dried apricots, chopped
  • 1/4 cup dried cranberries
  • 10 raw shallots, peeled and quartered
  • 3/4 cup fresh flat leaf parsley, chopped
  • 1 cup low-sodium chicken broth
**Before preparing this stuffing, be sure to thaw out Ezekiel Bread and lay slices on a paper towel to dry out a little bit.
  1. Preheat over to 325 degrees F.
  2. Place bread cubes in a large bowl.  Mix in the thyme, rosemary, sage, and fresh ground black pepper.
  3. Melt olive oil based margarine in a large frying pan on medium heat. 
  4. Add onions and garlic and sauté for approximately 2 minutes.  Add sliced celery, and stir frequently.  Cook for about 5 minutes. 
  5. Stir the onion mixture into the bowl containing the bread.  Add the apricots, dried cranberries, quartered shallots, and parsley. Stir in the broth until moistened.
  6. Spoon the uncooked stuffing into a large casserole dish sprayed very lightly with olive oil cooking spray.
  7. Loosely cover the casserole dish with tin foil. 
  8. Bake in oven for 30 minutes, remove the foil and thoroughly stir, then bake for another 30 minutes uncovered.
  9. Serve and Enjoy!

Clean Eating Spiced Apple Cider

Forget that store bought cider!
(Makes 2 Servings)
  • 2 cups apple juice
  • 2 cinnamon stick
  • 6 Black pepper corns
  • 6 Whole Cloves
  • Zest of 1/2 an orange
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  1. If using fresh apples, wash, cut and juice them.
  2. Combine all ingredients in a pot and bring to a boil.
  3. Reduce heat and simmer for 5-20 minutes, depending on how strong you like your cider.
  4. Pour juice through a fine-meshed sieve, into a mug.  Allow to cool slightly.

Clean Eating Dinner Rolls

Here is a great clean version of dinner rolls that won't leave you feeling full and bloated. Courtesy of The Gracious Pantry!

(Makes 12 rolls)
  • 3 1/2 cups whole wheat pastry flour
  • 1 pack rapid-rise, highly active yeast
  • 1 Tbsp. honey
  • 3/4 cups warm water (105-115 degrees F)
  • 1 tsp. sea salt
  • 3/4 cup almond milk (soy, hemp, cow, or rice milk will work too)
  • 2 Tbsp. olive oil and extra for coating dough
  1. Preheat over to 350 degrees F.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the honey and water and stir until honey is dissolved.
  3. Add yeast to the water / honey mixture and let stand until foamy (about 10 minutes)
  4. In a medium sized bowl, combine the flour and salt.
  5. Once the yeast mixture is foamy, add the oil and milk and stir briefly.
  6. Add the flour to the liquid mixture and stir with a wooden spoon until it gets thick enough to knead with your hands (if you have a mixer, you can do this all in one bowl with a dough hook).
  7. Knead for about 5 minutes.  The dough should be slightly sticky, but firm and smooth.  If it's too sticky, add a bit more flour, 1 Tbsp at a time.
  8. Coat the ball of dough in olive oil, cover the bowl with a towel and allow the dough to rise for 1 hour.
  9. Now break the dough into 12 equal pieces and roll into balls.
  10. Place on an oiled cookie sheet, cover with a towel and let rise for 1 more hour.
  11. Brush the rolls with a small amount of milk, using a basting brush.
  12. Bake rolls for approximately 40-50 minutes.  They should have a nice golden brown crust when done.
  13. Remove from over and cool on a cooling rack.
They taste delicious when served a bit warm!

Slow Cooker Mashed Sweet Potatoes

This is a FANTASTIC way to prepare your sweet potatoes, especially on Thanksgiving.  While you focus on the Turkey and other side dishes, your sweet potatoes can be cooking in the crockpot!
  • 2 lb. sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1/2 inch slices
  • 1 cup apple juice (NO SUGAR ADDED - 100% JUICE)
  • 1 Tbsp.  ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp. allspice
  • 1/4 tsp. ground cloves
  • Pecans (optional)
  • Honey or maple syrup to taste (optional for a sweeter taste)
  1. Peel and cut sweet potatoes and place them in the slow cooker.
  2. Add 1/2 cup of the apple juice as well as the spices.
  3. Cook on low for 4-5 hours, until the potatoes are tender.
  4. Once potatoes are fully cooked, use a hand blender to mix the sweet potatoes inside the slow cooker.   While doing so, add the other 1/2 cup of juice.  You can season with more cinnamon and nutmeg.  If you prefer a sweeter taste, you can mix a dab of honey or maple syrup as well. 
  5. Top with pecans.
  6. Serve and enjoy!


Time for a Turkey Recipe!  It's so easy to get lost in the butter and sodium that many Thanksgiving turkeys have; however, that just adds to the tired, bloated feeling that you get after you eat it.  Here is a great recipe to try!

  • 1 split bone-in, skin-on turkey breast (about 2 1/2 lb)
  • 2 Tbsp Olive Oil
  • 2 Tsp Fresh Lemon Juice
  • 1 Tsp Lemon Zest
  • 1 Tsp minced Fresh Rosemary Leaves
  • 1 Tsp. Minced Fresh Sage Leaves
  • 2 Tsp. Minced Fresh Thyme Leaves
  • 1/2 Tsp. Kosher Salt
  • 1/4 Tsp. ground black pepper
  1. Preheat over to 425 Degrees F.  Place turkey breast, skin-side up, on a rack in a roasting pan.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together oil, lemon juice and zest, herbs, salt and pepper.  Using your fingers, gently loosen skin from turkey breast meat without removing it completely.  Rub herb-oil mixture under skin and all over turkey breast meat (including underneath breast as well).
  3. Roast, skin side-up, for 50 to 60 minutes or until an instant-read thermometer reads 165 degrees F when inserted into the thickest part of the breast (test in a few places to make sure).
  4. Cover the turkey with foil and let it rest at room temperature for 15 minutes.  Remove and discard skin, then cut turkey breast from the bone.  
  5. Slice meat and serve!

Clean Eating Cranberry Sauce

Another great recipe from The Gracious Pantry! 
  • 12 ounce bag of fresh cranberries (approx. 3 1/4 cups)
  • 1/2 cup honey or maple syrup
  • 1 medium cinnamon stick
  • Zest of one large orange
  • 1 cup water
  1. Combine all of the ingredients into a pot and cook over medium-high heat for about 30-45 minutes. 
  2. When most of the liquid is cooked out, turn your stove down to a simmer.  The longer it simmers, the thicker the sauce will get.  Don't let all of the liquid cook out or it will burn!  Stir frequently.
***Allow to cool before you eat!

Clean Eating Green Bean Casserole

I'm sure many Thanksgiving dinner tables will have some sort of Green Bean Casserole dish on them.  First thought, green beans are a vegetable so it must be a healthy dish, right?  WRONG!  Like most casserole's, many Green Bean Casserole's have some sort of condensed, canned cream soup.  So, I found this recipe from one of my favorite websites, The Gracious Pantry.   While it may take a few extra steps to make than your recipe, I can guarantee it will be worth it! Give it a try and let me know your thoughts!
First thing first, make YOUR OWN cream of Mushroom Soup!  This is a great recipe that can be used in other recipes, or you can just eat it alone!
  • 1 pound mushrooms, sliced
  • 4 cups chicken broth - Low Sodium
  • 2 tsp olive oil
  • 1/4 cup whole wheat pastry flour
  • 1 tbsp. balsamic vinegar
  • 2 cups milk
  1. Saute mushrooms in oil over low heat.  Stir frequently.
  2. When the moisture releases from the mushrooms and the liquid comes out, add the balsamic vinegar followed by the flour.  (The flour will soak up all the liquid).
  3. Pour the chicken broth into a pot and transfer the mushrooms to the same pot to combine with the broth.
  4. Add milk and bring to a boil.  Reduce heat and simmer for about 10 minutes.
  5. Set aside until needed in the Green Bean Casserole Recipe.
Okay, on to the Green Bean Casserole...
Ingredients for Crumb Topping:

  • 2 slices clean, toasted bread
  • 1/4 cup roasted almonds (no sugar added)
  • 1 tbsp. onion powder
Ingredients for Casserole:
  • 1 pound frozen green beans
  • 1 1/2 cups Clean Eating Cream of Mushroom Soup (noted above) warmed and thickened with 2 tbsp. whole wheat flour
  • t tsp cornstarch or tapioca starch
** Warm the soup over high heat and whish in the flour and starch**

  1. Preheat over to 350 degrees F.
  2. Place the frozen green beans in a casserole and pour the soup on top.
  3. Top with as much topping as you like.
  4. Bake for 40-50 minutes, or until the topping has a nice crunch to it.
  5. Cool and Serve!

Pumpkin Fluff

In order to make healthy choices over the Thanksgiving holiday, there has to actually BE healthy choices to choose from!  I found this recipe from 100 Days of Real Food and it is a DELICIOUS Pumpkin Fluff dessert that doesn't use Cool Whip and Pudding!  Remember, it is still considered a dessert, not something to add to your daily diet.  If you are taking or serving a dessert at your Thanksgiving table, I would highly recommend this one.  My two and three year old LOVED it, so I consider that a success!

  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1/2 cup cream cheese (Plain Greek Yogurt is a healthier alternative)
  • 2 Tbsp pure maple syrup
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice mix
  • 1 cup pumpkin puree
  • cinnamon to garnish
  • Dip dippers of your choice: apple slices and/or whole wheat graham crackers work great!
  1. Combine the heavy cream, cream cheese (or Greek Yogurt), syrup, vanilla and pumpkin pie spice in a mixing bowl.  Mix with electric beaters on low and blend unit the cream cheese is broken up and no longer has big clumps. You will not have the clump issue if using Greek Yogurt. At that point, turn the mixer to high speed and blend until mixture thickens...about 1 to 2 minutes.
  2. Turn the speed back down to low and carefully blend in the pumpkin puree. 
  3. Viol la!  Transfer dip into a serving dish, sprinkle a little cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice on top, and serve with your choice of dippers.
**Store leftover dip in the refrigerator. 
This recipes serves 8-10.
